The 1st half began with West putting the pressure on from their kick off and strong arming the rucks to get 2 trys past the Oban side. However that awakened the Oban side as they fought back with Jordan MacIntyre turning the ball over and Julie Campbell leading the forward charge through West’s defence. Resulting in Julie Campbell bulldozing through West to score a smashing try. Followed in quick succession by a Roadrunner style try (meep meep) from debut Ellie Macinnes as she ran from her own 22 all the way around and through West to score her 1st ever try. Unfortunately West snuck back in to score a few more try’s across the board before half time. Julie Campbell then burst through them to score her 2nd try of the match. All 3 try’s successfully converted by Ellie Macinnes.
Halftime score 29-21.
The 2nd half started with a stronger defence from the Oban side with Eilidh Graham being a strong last line of defence. With play being set up by Ellie Picken for Veronica Speirs to carry strongly past West’s first lines of defence. The Oban side kept West in their own 10 metres until Selina Keppie (Captain) stepped several of the West players to score directly under their posts.
Soon after speedster Poppy Mckillop came flying over the line with another try for Oban. Although following this West came back fighting with a few more try’s. This was not the end for Oban however as they counterattacked with a series of successful offloads between the forwards and backs resulting in a try scored by Rachel Macdonald. Alas West finished the stronger team capitalising on the Oban side’s rustiness in defence towards the end of the game.
Full Time 56-36.
The Oban Ladies are looking forward to the rematch on home soil with more training under their belts.
