Match report

Oban 45 – 31 Strathaven

May 4, 2024

Strathaven made the journey for a crucial match, given their position in the relegation battle, and only a win would result in staying in West 1.

Oban faced an early setback as Strathaven scored within four minutes, and converting. However, Oban gained momentum with Robert Wallace’s impressive kick, advancing to the opposition’s 5-metre line.

Despite strong runs from Oban’s pack, they fell short of the try line, losing possession. Strathaven cleared the ball to the halfway line, showing real grit and determination in defence. Good ball handling from Kyle Graham and George Ritchie brought Oban back to the opposition 22-metre. A penalty awarded to Oban was kicked into touch by Fergus McIntyre, leading to Jamie Bates winning possession, resulting in a try by Calum MacLachlan, converted by McIntyre, levelling the score at 7-7.

Oban’s performance improved, with a break by Lorne MacLachlan passing to his brother Calum for another try, converted by McIntyre. However, Strathaven responded almost immediately with an unconverted try.

Oban continued their offensive, leading to a try by Ewan Shearer, sealing the first half for them. The second half started well for Oban with a try by Iwan Roberts, unconverted. Play mostly remained in the middle of the field, with a yellow card given to a Strathaven player for a high tackle on Robert Wallace.

Despite this, Strathaven scored again, but Oban replied with a try by Robert, followed by Jamie Bates’ powerful run resulting in a converted try.

Strathaven carried incredibly hard all game and scored some great tries, but Oban edged it, with the final score reading 45-31. Oban face Dalziel in their last game of the season, after which they’ll have a much needed rest before next season. Thanks go to supporters and sponsors for their backing throughout this season.
