Oban u16 travelled to Cambuslang to play in week 1 of the national 2 league. Great conditions for running rugby and the girls did not disappoint. In the new format they play 2 matches on the day and first up for oban was the hosts cambuslang. Playing a 13-side match on full pitch. Oban secured majority possession in the early exchanges and were rewarded with the first try of the match by Gemma Cameron. Cairistiona macaloon quickly added a second try for oban and the girls were getting into the swing of their game plan. Ruth joss scored a third try in her u16 debut at hooker. Oban slowed their pace and concentration allowing cambuslang to score two quick tries straight for the restarts. Half time brought a welcome break and oban restarted the second half full of vigour. The second half saw tries from Ruby blainey, Abby Macqueen, Cairistiona macaloon and Gemma Cameron giving the oban girls a 35-10 win.

The second match was against Wigtownshire which was rearranged due to Cumnock not being able to attend this round. This was played 10-side to number match the Galloway side and Abby macqueen was quick of the mark to break and score the first try of the match. Oban looked sharp with the ball and moved it well to find space but we’re often isolated at the break down. Individual tackling from Kate Cameron and Ula Gordon prevented Wigtownshire tries and turnovers gave oban scores for Gemma Cameron, autumn maclarty and cairistiona macaloon in the first half with Pamela Ingram kicking 2 from 4.
The second half opened up for the oban side and they were able to keep the ball alive well and excellent linking play from Anna Logan and Pamela Ingram led to more tries for Gemma Cameron x2, Abby macqueen , cairistiona macaloon and Anna Logan was rewarded with the final try and 2 more conversions from Ingram finished the game 53-5 to oban.
A great start to the season for the girls; who are away again next week to Cumnock. Training is on Wednesday after school.
